I was sitting on a bus one day, when on walked a young, cute, edgy looking fellow wearing a most provocative t-shirt. It simply asked, “Where’s the hardcore?” I immediately broke into riotous inner laughter, as I realized I had pretty much been asking the same question all my life. I thought about how I would like to meet and befriend this young man one day.

Interestingly enough, through a series of happy accidents over the following month, I was introduced to him and continued to run into him at various social events. Now he is one of my dearest friends. I would consider him to be hardcore.

So, what is hardcore anyway? One could say that my friend is hardcore because he has a septum piercing, wears his hair like the comic book character Wolverine, likes black pvc and has a tattoo, not to mention he is also gay, out and proud. But, these are not all the reasons I would give for considering him hardcore. True enough. His appearance does indicate that he is putting himself on the cutting edge of fashion, as this is the place where people create their own look based on an inner vision rather than external fashion dictates. And creating a style, rather than following one, is definitely one aspect of hardcore as well as just generally being able to think for oneself.

But one night, when I was in terrible distress, this young man put aside his own comfort and convenience to take care of me. That night I thought, “This man does not only say I love you, he “does” I love you. Now that’s hardcore”.

So in this one person I was able to see demonstrated three qualities that for me would describe hardcore: The ability to embrace and accept oneself despite social norms, criticisms or misgivings, the ability to think critically for oneself and be self-determining in terms of appearance by exercising one’s own creativity, and the ability to demonstrate integrity by not only talking a talk but also walking the walk, by backing up the talk with affirmative action.

More recently, another friend of mine described to me the story of the first screen kiss. He said that at the time, kissing on film was considered scandalous and how it took a real pioneer to break that ground in the film industry. I thought, “Now that’s hardcore as well”.

Pioneers who are at the forefront of new and ground breaking innovation in any area of thought, philosophy, art, science, sexual expression, technology, fashion, lifestyle and consciousness are hardcore. These are the risk takers who are willing to go beyond the boundaries of what are currently accepted as immovable and absolute truths. These adventurers are willing to move forward with the flow of a Universe that has now been proven to still be engaged in a continuous process of expansion and self-actualization. To risk being led into the unknown by an unquenchable desire to explore unlimited potential and infinite possibilities, and then to boldly return to the world with what one has discovered, is definitely hardcore. To allow oneself to be challenged by the idea that the truth one seeks may lie just outside of one’s comfort zone, and to risk leaving not only the social box, but also one’s personal box to find it, is hardcore.

Radical self love and acceptance: Creative self expression and exploration: Courageous critical thinking and self determination: Authentic dedication: Unscrupulous integrity: Fierce pursuit of new frontiers for the betterment of oneself and of others: Unwavering commitment to freedom, joy and growth for the individual and the collective: These are all qualities that we are using to define the condition of existence known as hardcore.

So then, where is the hardcore? Where ever you find these qualities, there you will find someone bringing it.
